Typically responsible for processing 40 to 45% of the annual U.S. Gulf Menhaden catch, we are a fully integrated operation processing menhaden into fishmeal and fish oil products.

Drawing our strength from a sustainable fishery, a global marketplace, and a diverse management team with extensive experience in the fishing industry and related agribusinesses, Daybrook has constantly reinvested in new technology to produce premium products.

Today, Daybrook's science-based products are distributed globally, earning an exemplary reputation in the marketplace.

Menhaden, small oily fish, are migratory plankton surface-feeders that swim in large schools during the fishing season, which extends from the 3rd Monday in April to November 1.

At Daybrook, we operate within a highly regulated, sustainable fishery under the authority of the Gulf States Menhaden Management Plan, with federal oversight by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Between our exclusive fish catch agreement with Westbank Fishing and our state-of-the-art shoreside facilities, we offer unparalleled quality products.

At Daybrook, we pride ourselves in offering high-quality products with optimum freshness. Our process enables Daybrook to provide customized products required for specialized diets in various high-performance feeds.

Aquaculture (fish farming) products help provide much needed food to support the world's population growth. Emerging markets, such as China and Asia, are driving forces in changing the supply/demand dynamics for fishmeal and fish oil.

The superior digestibility of Daybrook’s Prime Fishmeal is preferred by many feed formulators of early stage pig feeds to help piglets grow faster. Additionally, weaning pigs assimilate diets with fishmeal and mature in a much more healthy environment than when fed just plant-based proteins. Daybrook  Prime Fishmeal provides essential nutrients in agri-feeds and aqua-feed.

Prized for its omega-3 fatty acids, Daybrook Natural (PF) Menhaden Fishmeal is processed specifically for the pet food industry. The fat levels in the fishmeal are 20% higher in order to increase omega-3 availability. After processing, Daybrook Natural (PF) Menhaden Fishmeal is specially treated with natural antioxidants to preserve the “all natural product” status required in high-value pet food products.

Fish Oil

Fish oil is one of the two main co-products of our process and menhaden oil is sought after as a high quality aquaculture feed ingredient rich in omega-3 fatty acids.  Generally menhaden yield in the range of 10-13% oil which are typically in the 20-24% range on EPA+DHA the top two omega-3 fatty acids but when you also include DPA then menhaden has a total of 23-25% of these highly sought after omega-3’s.  All of our fish oil is put through carbon cleaning process to remove environmental contaminants which allows us to be well under all global requirements for dioxins, PCB’s, pesticides, heavy metals and other contaminants that are found in the world’s oceans.  Daybrook quality oil is known for being very low in FFA and other oxidative tests such as Peroxide (PV) and Anisidine values (AV).

Fish Solubles

Fish Solubles is a minor co-product as the overwhelming majority are added back to the fishmeal during the process.  However we have found that some customers have a high value demand for this both as an attractant for fish feeds or baits as well as a natural fertilizer for organic crops.  Fish solubles are actually an intermediate product made during the wet-rendering operation.  After cooking the fish and then pressing them we end up with an aqueous solution of water, dissolved proteins and fat.  After this is run through the oil separators the remaining “stick water” is sent to a series of evaporators to concentrate the product to a much thicker and higher protein product.  The product that is kept for sale is then mixed with acid to stabilize it for longer term storage to retard fermentation.

Innovative Capabilities & Unparalleled Quality

Daybrook’s fishmeal’s manufacturing technology provides gentle drying and ensures the highest standards for digestibility and freshness.

Our production operations are strategically located in Empire, Louisiana, about 60 miles south of New Orleans, near the mouth of the Mississippi River. From the refrigerated holding tanks of our supplier’s vessels through the production process, only fresh whole fish are used to make fishmeal and fish oil. The only by-product of our process is water vapor.

Immediately upon arrival at our docks, the refrigerated fish are tested for total volatile nitrogen (TVN), as a beginning measure of freshness to optimize our production process. Samples of whole fish are collected from the refrigerated hold of each vessel and sent to NOAA Fisheries for biological evaluation under their inspection program. Daybrook is AQSIQ-Certified for the People’s Republic of China and certified as a GMP+ facility, enabling export to EU member countries. In addition, our company is certified by NOAA’s Seafood Inspection Program which allows them to supply us with export “Health Certificates” for all international destinations.

Responsible practices are a cornerstone of our business plan.

One of the first U.S. fisheries companies to adopt a Responsible Fisheries Implementation Plan, Daybrook Fisheries has made responsible, sustainable fishing practices a key component of its business plan. The company actively participates in all state and federal management programs. Daybrook Fisheries’ manufacturing facility is certified by Global Trust as an International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organization-Responsible Supplier (IFFO-RS) now known as Marin Trust.

Every fish in the sea is important and Daybrook takes great care in making sure that the Company and its suppliers operate in ways that protect the Gulf menhaden fishery, its coastal waters and ecosystems. It is vital that we preserve this fishery for many more generations to come. We do this by partnering with local, state and federal agencies who help guide sustainable fishing practices and inform us about the health of the Gulf menhaden fishery.

In 2019 the Gulf of Mexico menhaden fishery was certified by MSC as a sustainable resource. Daybrook has also received the certification for the MSC CoC or Chain of Custody demonstrating that all fish processed by Daybrook are certified by this elite certification standard.
